Doctor’s day in India

July 1st—is National Doctors’ Day in India.

Here is why it is celebrated on this specific date:

  • Honoring Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy: July 1st marks both the birth and death anniversary of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy (1882–1962). He was one of India’s most legendary and respected physicians, as well as a prominent freedom fighter and the second Chief Minister of West Bengal. In recognition of his immense contributions to medicine and public service, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor, in 1961.
  • Recognizing the Medical Community: The Indian government officially established this observance in 1991 to pay tribute to Dr. Roy’s legacy and to express gratitude for the dedication, compassion, and tireless efforts of all doctors and healthcare professionals who work to save and improve lives.
(Note: While India observes Doctors’ Day on July 1st, different countries celebrate it on various other dates throughout the year. For instance, the United States celebrates it on March 30th.)
