EMU stands for Electric Multiple Unit. It is the technical name for the local trains running on Mumbai’s suburban railway network.
Unlike traditional trains that rely on a single locomotive (engine) at the front to pull the entire carriage, an EMU has multiple traction motors integrated throughout the train’s coaches.
How an EMU Works
- Self-Propelled Coaches: Power is distributed across several motorized passenger cars (called motor coaches) rather than a single engine.
- Overhead Lines: The train draws electricity from overhead wires (catenary) via a roof-mounted pantograph.
- Bi-directional Driving: It has a driver’s cab at both ends, allowing it to reverse direction instantly at terminating stations without needing to turn the train around. [6, 7]
Why EMUs are Used for Mumbai Locals
- Rapid Acceleration and Braking: Distributed power allows the train to pick up speed quickly after stopping at closely spaced stations.
- Higher Passenger Capacity: Because there is no separate heavy engine, more space is available inside the coaches to accommodate Mumbai’s high commuter volume. [8]
